Welcome Shannon Young to KGNU

Shannon is a longtime independent journalist, with a vast history in editorial and production leadership. She has been working in Mexico as a foreign correspondent who regularly contributed to PRX's "The World", Free Speech Radio News (FSRN), Public Radio International, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, The Guardian, Vice News, Truthout, and the Texas Observer.

In Shannon's words, "I am very much looking forward to joining the team at KGNU as the News & Public Affairs Director. I got my start in radio news reporting at KPFT in Houston and know that curiosity about radio as a volunteer can end up leading to an adventure that takes you around the world. After spending many years in FSRN's virtual newsroom, and then working remotely as a foreign correspondent, I'm eager to get back into an in-person community radio environment."

At FSRN, Shannon served in varying editorial capacities and as Executive Producer, managing a team of global reporters for the daily newscast which was broadcast on hundreds of affiliate stations across the US.

Shannon, who is fluent bilingual English-Spanish, has just made the move from Oaxaca, Mexico to lead the KGNU News Department. She says, "In my decision to relocate, I'm eager to find a new home within a healthy community media landscape. After so many years of remote work, I look forward to working within a physical newsroom with a focus on local communities."

Shannon brings management, production, reporting, editorial experience, volunteer coordination, and newsroom experience to KGNU to help us re-imagine how our news department might best drive broad community impact through community-driven stories, news, and information.

Over the coming months, Shannon and the KGNU News Department will host a series of virtual community listening sessions, listener surveys, and cafecitos to learn more about local news and information gaps that KGNU listeners and community members across the Front Range are eager to bring to light.

Please join us in offering a warm welcome to Shannon Young!
