New Voices for Climate Justice: A Community Conversation

Please RSVP by Feb. 1.

KGNU Community Radio and the Foundations for Leaders Organizing for Water and Sustainability (FLOWS) at Boulders University of Colorado Environmental Center invite you to New Voices for Climate Justice: A Community Conversation on Grassroots Leadership and Sustainability in Boulder County at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Sustainability leaders and technicians of the FLOWS at Boulders University of Colorado Environmental Center will lead a conversation about engaging underrepresented voices in climate work. They will discuss their efforts to make real change on an individual and community level with diverse students and low-income residents. They will also expand on some of the stories featured during a year-long partnership with KGNU exploring a different paradigm within sustainability work.

FLOWS founder Michelle Gabrieloff-Parish notes "Underrepresented communities often are environmental leaders but were not really recognized as such. FLOWS highlights the leadership of underrepresented and low-income communities Its not actually unusual. Globally, this is what the sustainability movement looks like."

Throughout 2019 KGNU aired in-depth news stories and public service announcements on sustainability practices and tips with leaders from the FLOWS program. The community-designed and led project aimed to highlight the knowledge, practice, and traditions around resource sustainability that have been woven into the daily lives of low-income and immigrant communities. The project also aimed to address a gap in the public education landscape and flip the typical top-down approach by providing stories and productions on sustainability solutions from a community perspective.

"The solutions need to be multi-dimensional because the problems are multi-dimensional. Our approach to solutions need to be as diverse as the problem is. We need everybody."

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the lobby, 5:00-6:00 p.m.

The panel conversation will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session, 7:30-8:00 p.m.

This event is free with an RSVP, thanks to the support from the Boulder County Resource Conservation Divisions Zero Waste Funding Program, Elevations Credit Union and Boulder Arts Commission.
