Job Description

KGNU, a 30-year-old community radio station with studios in Boulder and Denver CO, is seeking a DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR.

The Development Director will work under the general supervision of the Station Manager within a small staff where consensus decision-making is the norm.

We seek a Development Director to strengthen existing donor relationships, develop new ones and lead our capital campaign. In addition to our original 88.5 FM frequency, KGNU purchased a second frequency (1390 AM) in 2004, expanding our potential audience by over two million people. Leading the fundraising for this expansion project will be a key part of the Development Directors work.

Reports To: Station Manager

Position Concept: The Development Director is charged with the responsibility of organizing and managing activities related to the analysis, planning, implementation, control and evaluation of fund raising activities to successfully execute a funding program that will include:
Small and major donor gifts
Annual giving
Donor tracking
Planned giving
Foundation grants

The development director will work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and board in a team environment. The development director will divide their time between KGNUs main offices in Boulder, our Denver studio and travel throughout the metro area.

The following list of principal responsibilities is meant to illustrate the types of tasks usually found in this position. However, actual performance of the job may not always involve all of the duties listed, and the job may require performance of other duties not found on this list.

Principal Responsibilities

1. With assistance from Station Manager and KGNU community, create a diversified funding strategy.
2. Provide administrative support to the Station Manager and fund raising committee in all of its activities through the development and implementation of fund raising action plans.
3. With input from Station Manager, board committees and staff, create appropriate record-keeping system for tracking donor participation, identification and cultivation of prospects, and volunteer involvement in programs.
4. Participate in the creation and implementation of special events as they are approved by the events committee.
5. In concert with the appropriate committees, prepare or initiate preparation of all content and materials needed for approved fund raising programs, including proposals to donors and donor prospects, gift recognition and acknowledgment materials, appeal letter, annual report, etc.
6. Research or initiate research and data compilation on potential individuals and foundation donors identified by board members, staff members, and volunteers by virtue of their gift history to similar organizations or activities.
7. Keep up to date on current fund raising programs, practice, and procedures being used in the not-for-profit sector and inform board, volunteers, and other leaders of matters that would benefit and interest them in their work on behalf of KGNU.
8. Prepare plans of action for all approved fund raising including budgets and reports that support their implementation.
9. Work with Station Manager in analyzing the fund raising programs and planning for future activities.
10. Assist the Station Manager with identifying and developing opportunities for future growth of the organization. Participate in the forecasting activities to identify future funding needs and issues and development of a funding plan to address these needs/issues.
11. Work with staff members and volunteers to ensure that all fund raising is consistent with the overall mission, philosophy and strategic plan of KGNU.
12. Document all fund raising activities and provide monthly comprehensive activity reports to the Station Manager and the Board of Directors.
13. Keep up to date about community radio and available resources.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics Required:

1. Demonstrated ability to effectively function in a collaborative manner with staff, board, volunteers and committees, and create and maintain a harmonious work environment.
2. Exceptional organizational planning and problem solving skills.
3. Proven success in fund raising, particularly in major donor solicitation
4. Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both oral and written) including public speaking
5. Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop relationships with others including donors
6. Demonstrated ability to work on many complex projects simultaneously and to prioritize work.
7. Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets.
8. Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate board, staff and volunteers in fundraising projects
9. Demonstrated ability to understand others and their motivations and needs and to train, supervise and motivate as needed.
10. Knowledge of database management and donor data research.
11. Willingness to travel occasionally, if needed.
12. Passion and commitment to community radio.

2. Knowledge about philanthropic community in Colorado

SALARY: KGNU staff salary of $39,500 plus excellent medical benefits and flexible, generous vacation policy.
