Karl Eggert, JazzBo Extraordinaire
Jenny Scheinman 12 Songs Cryptogramophone.
A beautiful production that mixes folk, jazz, rock, and classical elements into a perfect musical stew.
Thelonious Monk  and John Coltrane Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall Blue Note.
A jazz Holy Grail discovered in the dusty archives of the Smithsonian.
Billy Bang Vietnam Reflections Justin Time.
The second album by Bang features performances reflecting his and his musician's feelings about Viet Nam (all the jazz musicians on the cd are veterans of the Viet Nam War; all the other musicians are Viet Namese).
Khan Jamal Peace Warrior Random Chance Records.
Eclectic recordings from the late 1980s by vibraphonist Jamal.  Sometimes square, sometimes ahead of its time, always swinging and passionate.
The Nels Cline Singers The Giant Pin Cryptogramophone.
One of the great electric guitar players mixing genres and making what he creates beyond category and therefore incomparable.
Ebony Band Amsterdam Homenaje a Revultas Channel Classics.
Small orchestra of European musicians play rarely if ever heard compositions by early Twentieth-Century, Mexican-Classical composer Silvestre Revultas. Viva Mexico!  Viva Revultas!
The Billy Nayer Show Goodbye Straplight Sarentino, I Will Miss You BSG Records.
Sometimes whacky, sometimes poignant songs performed by a sometimes whacky, sometimes poignant rock trio.  Believe it or not this group's musical esthetic reminds me most of the original Carter Family.
Nguyen Le Bakida The Act Company.
Viet Namese electric guitarist based in Paris.  His music combines aspects of jazz and Viet Namese music, as well as touches of Hendricks.
Red Norvo Red Norvo Trio.
Jazz vibraphonist Norvo recorded in 1954 with support from Jimmy Raney on guitar and Red Mitchell on bass.  The tunes are great.  The performances Swing.  Norvo is impeccable.
Earl Hines Blues in Thirds Black Lion.
Perhaps the greatest of all jazz pianists playing solo in 1965.  Listen to his version of Tea for Two on this cd and you can understand why one critic called him Jazz's  "most daring" improviser.
Most Interesting Musician of 2005.  For me it is Jenny Scheinman.  Her own cds this year and last were outstanding.  Her performances as a sideperson on a number of other cds were of an equally high standard.

Shaw. Reggae bloodlines Sat 1-4. (Newest member of the Reggae rotation.). "2005 has been a bountiful year for reggae music.  There were a handful of amazing reissues of legendary artists, with simultaneous releases from living legends including their wisdom on our current world system and a handful of young veterans bubbling to the top.  Everyday there seems to be another album or track to check out as reggae continues to provide insight in our lives while giving plenty of bass to wind up our waists!  Jah guide and live.  Have a great 2006!  Thanks to all the labels, musicians, KGNU folks, and listeners!  Shaw

Nels Cline Singers  The Giant Pin         Cryptogramophone
(a brilliant guitarist who has quickly become one of my faves. So many moods covered on this album!)
Brian Eno        Another Day on Earth  Ryko
(What a year for Eno!  After the wonderful reissues on Astralwerks, this new release finds the great balance of songs and themes that I love Eno for)
Leroy Young: The Grandmaster  Just Like That  Stonetree
(A bit of a surprise album, sent with one we requested.  Great dub poetry out of Belize)
Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings  Naturally  Daptone
(For a one-time Motown Gal, it’s great to see soul live as it does with Sharon.)
Amadou & Mariam  Dimanche a Bamako  Nonesuch
(Amadou & Mariam already made great music, here they teamed up with producer Manu Chao to create a delightful excursion through Bamako, Mali)
Dub Gabriel  Bass Jihad  Azra
(Something keeps bringing me back to the dub funk sounds here, it’s got a wider range of sounds than Konono #1 thus ooching them out of the selection for me this year)
Either/Orchestra  Live in Addis     Buda
(If I had more time to spend with this it might even slide higher on the list.  Our old favorite Boston avant big band traveled to Ethiopia to work with some of the classic performers of Ethiopian music bringing some fresh perspectives to the music.)
Ali Farka Toure & Toumani Diabate  In the Heart of the Moon  World Circuit
(What can I say, two great Malian musicians at the top of their form!)
Nortec Collective  Tijuana Sessions 3  Nacional
(Another album that deserves more listening, it’s got a fresh and fun approach that I’ve really enjoyed)
Devendra Banhart  Cripple Crow     XL
(Devendra seeped into my conscience last spring and with this release has shown his crazy, delightful, whimsical variety.  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for musicians like him and CocoRosie)
EC's Record Label picks of the year:
Nonesuch Records - A wonderful roster and range of material!  From Wilco to Amadou & Mariam, Ry Cooder to a great New Orleans tribute, and how can one forget the Kronos Quartet.  This has been a year of must buys from Nonesuch!
Cryptogramaphone - I can't quite say if their material got that much better or my tastes finally caught up with Cryptogramaphones, but the music from Nels and Alex Cline, Jenny Scheinmann, and Mark Dresser released this year has such a great sense of adventure and delight.  Not to mention the clever and quirky packaging!

Bettye Lavette I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise Anti
Legendary, but under-heralded, soul singer reinterprets songs by Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Sinead O’Connor and Dolly Parton, re-working arrangements and injecting her unique vocal flourishes. She also re-defines singing at times as on Lucinda Williams’ “Joy” where she amazingly stretches the word “joy” into two syllables – the aural embodiment of the word.
Feist Let it die Interscope
Arguably the best song of the year is found on this Canadian’s first proper debut album. “Mushaboom,” is an understated generational lament (in the vein of Joni Mitchell’s “Song for Sharon”) depicting the social dilemma of echo-boomers whose financial situation don’t allow them to easily become adults.

But in the meantime I've got it hard
Second floor living without a yard
It may be years until the day
My dreams will match up with my pay

Feist offers other generational insights on one-night stands and the fluctuating seasons’ challenge to romantic judgment in “One Evening” and “Gatekeeper.” Her majestic cover of fellow Canadian Ron Sexsmith’s “Secret Heart” serves as a perfect capstone to this cornucopia of eclectic sounds and nuanced delights.

Deerhoof Runners Four Kill Rock Stars
Perfect yin and yang. Songs alternate between tenuous female vocals and full-on Jimi Hendrix machine-gun guitars. The drummer and bassist stream along in free-jazz mode, a result of the band listening to lots of mid-70s Miles Davis before this album’s inception.
Lucinda Williams Live at the Fillmore Lost Highway
Double-album features one of the best live bands on the road. Coupled with William’s rough-hewn vocals, this album adds new dimension to the Louisiana singer’s literary masterpieces by emphasizing the gritty details in songs like “Essence,” “Overtime,” “Blue,” and “Lonely Girls.”
Amsterdam The Journey Beat Crazy
With more hooks, exuberance and better songs than some bands have in a career, it’s no wonder that this Liverpool quintet’s debut captured the ear of the late BBC DJ John Peel, who named “Does this Train Stop on Merseyside?” his second favorite song.
Sexsmith & Kerr Destination Unknown ??
This album doesn’t appear to be from 2005. The two-part harmonies of gifted Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith and his long-time collaborator Don Kerr sound like they were recorded by Brothers Louvin or Everly sometime between 1957 and 1962.But who cares about the sounds of the day when there’s an album that flows this effortlessly from beginning to end?
The Like Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? Geffen
This near-perfect record by an all-girl teenage trio recalls the stark lushness of Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine sandwiched between the bombastic drums and guitar of “London Calling” by the Clash. Ignore the youth at your own peril.
General Elektriks Cliqety Kliqk Quantum
It’s no secret the most innovative sounds these days are found in hip-hop. Hervé Salters, a French vintage keyboard aficionado, composer and songwriter makes sonic backdrops perfect for any old-school hip-hop lover’s foray on a jungle-themed carousel inside a swinging 1960’s Paris theme park complete with vertigo-inducing organ music played by Martians.
Black Mountain Black Mountain Jagjaguwar
Sounding like either the Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin or Kraftwerk depending on your CD player’s digital LCD number, this Canadian debut album displays a diverse range of styles making it hard to predict where you’ll be taken to next.
Choubi, Choubi Folk and Pop Sounds from Iraq Sublime Frequencies
Who can resist an album with song titles like “Oh Mother, The Handsome Man Tortures Me” that were recorded by largely unidentified artists in Iraq during the reign of Sadaam Hussein? It appears Hussein, Donald Rumsfeld's former pal and business partner, loved the arts and music and dubbed singers the “eight division” of his armed forces. Helping to preserve a small sampling of Iraq’s rich musical heritage by compiling music found in Iraqi cassettes and LPs found in Syria, Europe and Iraqi areas in Detroit, these wildly intoxicating string sections, ouds and rapid-fire beats should be standard issue in boom boxes equipped to every U.S. armed forces personnel. If our soldiers can’t have armor for their vehicles the troops should at least benefit from the Iraq’s cultural beauty as they roam this distant land we’ve regrettably come to occupy.
