Weekly Report from Boulder
Last week's concert was a classical show.  The Takacs Quartet is a highly touted string quartet based out of Boulder.  This year they added a new violist so I jumped when I got the chance to go hear them.  Unfortunately the program wasn't as dynamic as I have heard them do in the past.  The opening was a piece by Mozart, a duo for violin and viola.  It gave Geraldine Walther, the violist, a chance to shine, but I take after my mother not being overwhelmed by Mozart.  The final piece was a Brahms Piano Quintet which drew comparisons from the author of the program notes to Schubert.  Uh-oh, my guard went up, Schubert is also not a favorite.  This was nice though, not as trite as I find much Schubert.  Mozart and Schubert both wrote fairly simple themes that have never grabbed me.  Thankfully the middle piece was a Beethoven quartet that had more dynamics, more richness and more interesting variations on themes than the other works.

Later this week finds a stretch of three concerts coming up in six days!  I'll be hearing a lot of great guitars in there, I've never before heard Elliott Sharp so I look forward to that.  I've been coordinating interviews or in-studios for two out of the three, it's amazing how much time that can take sometimes.

I had a fun party over the weekend starting with my women friends where we met at the house of a jewelry-making friend who let us go wild and make our own baubles and bangles.  It was a great way to spend the afternoon.  Next we moved on to the relatively new Storyville Creole Café in Longmont.  We went there in recognition of the trip I didn't make to New Orleans for Halloween.  The staff were great and the food was very tasty!  I'll go back.
