Weekly Report from Boulder
I do love fall but sure can't do weekends like this one all the time! Friday evening we did our all-station meeting/potluck. Then it was off to Denver's Larimer Lounge. It's about time I got there, as it seems to be one of the hip places in Denver, a great variety of bands and a young, interesting crowd. I don't know that we ever figured out who the opening band was but next up was the Billy Nayer Show. They were solid and did a good set, despite the lack of songs about monkeys.

The band we were there for was Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. I just don't know where to start if you've never seen them. They are inventive, theatrical, playing many home-made instruments, influenced by music from classical to metal to prog-rock to cabaret, and all wearing torn white dresses. Carla Kihlstedt was our main attraction as she is an amazing violinist. I've been finding not all of her fans like this band as it's not nearly as accessible as Tin Hat, who themselves are no simple band. For me it showed more of her depth to see her willingness to delve into this corner of her musical mind.

Hearing Carla made it hard to relate to the opening band last night at the Boulder Theater. Formed with bass/cello/violin/drums, the violinist was the weak link. His poor intonation and all too frequent misses brought the band down, though I liked the notion of them.

Adrian Belew then came out and played the most amazing show I've seen from him in a long time. His ease with his bandmates, relaxed nature, and playful delivery made for a wonderful evening. The playlist ran from old solo material to King Crimson tracks to some of him more recent and adventurous materials. Adrian's agility and effortless nature on the guitar reminded me why he continues after so many years to be up at the top of my guitar gods list.

We're having a lovely autumn here so to round out the weekend I got in a 27 mile mountain bike ride on Saturday and a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday. They are almost through with shuttle buses for the season so it was nice to do one last point to point hike through the quaking aspen trees with the bugling elks gathering around in the meadows. Looks like the high country will get more snow this week!
