Weekly Report from Boulder
Happy Fourth of July! I’m hoping to get reports done quickly, do our Kabaret live music show, and be able to get out of here in time for some fireworks. Though I already saw a good variety of fireworks and blasts last night.

My friend Bonnie works for Ball Aerospace so she had folks over for a Deep Impact party. While I thought the views of the control room rather dull, everyone else was saying “Look there’s Steve, oh and that’s...” It’s an amazing feat having hit the comet, when one considers that an object the size of a dishwasher traveled for six months to be in the way for a yam shaped comet, smaller than Manhattan to run into. Especially impressive is that the impact was aimed for an area, oh around Tribeca, so that the flyby craft could dodge underneath.

Earlier in the week John Doe was in town opening for Lucinda Williams. He’s still great high-energy, and has a solid band, Luca, out of Tucson backing him up. On Wednesday they all came by the station so John could do an interview and play some songs. While John was in the air-studio I chatted some with the guys from Luca about the whole Tucson scene and how much influence it has in our area now. Once off the air John made himself at home to check some email and I got a sneak preview of the artwork for the Knitters album.

Friday was the opening of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and a friend and I went to see Twelfth Night. As with much Shakespeare the first half was rich with characters and mistaken identities and misunderstandings. The pace picked up after intermission and held me much better. Sure, it helps to have had time to look at the program notes and get caught up on those confusing plot details. All in all they had a strong cast but I particularly enjoyed the actor playing Malvolio, his similarity to John Cleese was not just in looks but in his well paced physical gags.

Besides for the nightly parties, the long weekend for me has been about biking and hiking. Even if I had to come in today, I was happy to get out for a good long bike ride first!
