Weekly Report from Boulder
Last week was full and busy. On Tuesday night King Sunny Ade returned to town for a show at the Boulder Theater. Though not the crowd he deserved, he still put on a great high-energy event. This was fun for me as he's one of the first African artists I started listening to and while he used to tour a great deal, it had been quite a while since I'd seen him. And whilst King Sunny and many of the band are a few years older and somewhat richer in the gray hairs, they play together so well. Thursday night saw Saul Williams come to town in a benefit for Free the Slaves put on by the Naropa Student Union. While Saul was great, I was not so impressed with the setup of the evening. His performance was spoken word and started three and a half hours after the listed show time. In the meantime, it was a bit much of the young but earnest Naropa poets.

Friday night I enjoyed dinner with a friend and was looking forward to that early night at home with some music and a book. Unfortunately my town is noted for its power outages and I arrived shortly after the start of a two hour blackout. The new evening agenda was a glass of wine and some fiddling around on my guitar, sadly limited to the three songs I know as it was too dark to try to read, even by candlelight.

Sunday was the end of ski season and it went out in style! I got in about three hours at Copper Mountain before returning to my car to get on regular shoes and clothes and grab a beer before Spearhead kicked out a two hour long free set. What a great setting and performance to wrap up the season. Franti was giving one of his "thank the mountain and know it'll be there next year" rants right at the moment the lift in front of us shut down. Afterwards it was back here to work during the hip-hop show and to lead up the world music show.
