Weekly Report from Boulder
"I don't think my government is my nanny. I still have never understood why something as simple as turning it off is not part of the answer." Michael Powell as quoted in Salon.com.
What ironic words to find from Michael Powell who did just the opposite in his tenure at the FCC. I was not at all broken hearted to hear of his resignation from that post. Not that I think it likely we get someone much better. But perhaps some sense will prevail and the FCC will not be just one more outlet of the government's enforcement of our moral values. As a kid I watched a lot of Canadian TV full of breasts and swearing and never thought it made me a worse person.

On Friday, Jolie Holland stopped by for a brief afternoon performance. It's great to see a performer so comfortable with her band and traveling mates. The road manager readily left them in our care to make a quick trip for some forgotten items to local music store HB Woodsongs. Meanwhile Jolie and the band worked on some new songs before going live. I understand Jello Biafra made it out to see her packed show at the Boulder Theater.

I headed up to Loveland in the evening, one of the few spots around to still catch a hockey game. The Colorado Eagles faced off against the Wichita Thunder. It was one of those nights where the old fight vs. hockey game adage could apply. So it made me miss watching a player like Joe Sakic who is a joy to watch skate rather than these guys with their frequently flying fists.

It's sad to note the passing of Johnny Carson. I don't watch much tv anymore and the lack of personalities like him is part of the reason. But Johnny is one of the examples I still use in talking to people about how to do a good interview; he listened, laughed at a guest's jokes, and didn't talk to guests before going live so he wouldn't lose the spontaneity.

Happy Chinese New Year to all, especially to ZoÎ and Sophie!
