Weekly Reports for 01/10/05
Happy New Year everyone! I'm back in action here after a very nice week away. Of course spending a vacation with family has its mixed blessings, but considering I awoke one day to a foot of fresh snow in a ski town, I am not about to complain! Thanks again to Kathy Gilbert for keeping an eye on things while I was gone.
We are in the midst of a special month for our Kabaret shows. Every Monday from 7-8pm KGNU hosts live music. This month I thought it would be fun to focus on the talents of our local youth. What a way to come back to work, to have the Lyons High Jazz Band in for the show. They got here around 5pm and filled the place with their teen energy, then went to work showing some great talent in the group. We're continuing next week with a youth marimba ensemble (I know, that's probably an only-in Boulder kinda band!) Shamwari, then the Longmont Children's Chorale, and wrapping up with the jazz band from New Vista, our local alternative High School. It's been exciting so far seeing the kids come in with their enthusiasm and talent!
Shortened playlists today (CMJ report categories only.) It's those first day back blues. However, please note a long awaited change in our hiphop. I've been working more with the Eclipse show DJs who are now submitting to me their plays. This weeks playlist is most reflective of their show as opposed to our standard ìall shows reportingî rule. But it's far more accurate as to the hip hop we are playing, rather than the 'Beatbox' and wider rule I have to use otherwise. We hope to continue to get these lists and make them available to you. As ever, all music still comes to me, but the DJs on the show will also be doing more screening on the music we receive.
Don't forget Not One Damn Dime Day on January 20. It's a simple protest to the rulers and the situation in Iraq, if you are so inclined. Granted the bulk of that consumption is likely to be displaced, but if we can show a cutback, I support that. And I realize Snopes and other hoax sites are discrediting it but hey, it's good to pay attention to our consumption habits! So no fast food, no clothing shopping, no lattes, no chain stores, no topping off the tank, but just for that one day.
