Weekly Report from Boulder
Last week is such a blur. I think I had about a three-day hangover. Tuesday morning I made it to the Grange Hall where we cast our ballots. Initially the line was long as we received our oversized ballot pages and awaited turns to blacken in the squares, SAT style, on the pages. A number of people didnít see the point and started sitting around on the floor to complete their ballots. So the election judges quickly modified a few more polling booths. And when my turn came, I sat at a folding table with a box fan separating me from the nearest voter. That evening I joined some friends with our wishful then crestfallen thoughts. But there is good news! We do NOT have to say Senator Coors. We will get to ride a train to Denver one day. And we did vote in favor of renewable energy. Many kudos to my local rep Alice Madden who helped rally the forces to also see a newly democratic state house take hold.
Wednesday morning I walked in to work from the bus, not having driven myself home the night before. My head was definitely spinning and spun anew to find Laurie Anderson in the station being interviewed by the CBC. She stayed on to speak with Davide so I could air the interview in the afternoon. Her show at the Boulder Theater was amazing and she started with a simple 'Iím not a very good loser.' Then she built on her performance reminding us of the importance of beauty in life and sharing her experiences at NASA where she was artist-in-residence. Something about the show was very cathartic for me, reminding me of why my little troubles of late are so small and that Bush too shall pass.
Radio shows the last few days have been very amazing. The outpouring of calls as people expressed their dismay was constant. I asked for the one word that summed up our feelings on Wednesday. Reactions included Dismay, Hopeless, Shock and Awe, and one woman who went with 'What would Jon Stewart Do?' (if he didnít have GW to pick on these next few years.)
Over the weekend I traveled up to Aspen for our High Country Community Radio station. It was great to see folks like James from KAFM, Brent from KAJX, and meet Luke from KDNK. I had the realization that in most Colorado counties where there is a solid community radio presence, we went for Kerry. Long live independent media!!
Aspen was gorgeous and warm and I had a lovely hour-long walk along the Roaring Fork River before going to the conference on Saturday.
