Weekly Report from Boulder
I see Karen Doran has gotten the CGT Whitewater CD out to people so we will no longer be the only ones playing it. I’ve of course been enjoying it and would point folks to tracks like The Marsh, Cantharis, Ghost Riders…., and Relative Illusion for starters. I’m actually going to see them in New Mexico as their Boulder gig fell through.

The last week included rollercoasters at Elitch’s, learning my new bus route, talking early about Talk Like a Pirate Day but not talking like a pirate on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and a great interview with author Esmeralda Santiago. She’s a writer of memoirs and we talked about her new book, The Turkish Lover. I’m likely to go back and read her earlier books about her childhood in Puerto Rico and her adolescence in New York as she is such a vivid author who comes to the work with great perspective. I loved this book and its examination of the long time she spent with a lover who in hindsight was just not good for her. What support her husband must have been for her to go through this process!

Last night we wrapped up the week by attending the opening of the CU Artist Series at Macky Auditorium. I love attending shows at Macky for its beautiful, clean lines, and normally good sound. Streb Dance Company is a modern, athletic, extreme dance company that spends a lot of time falling and crashing into each other. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it when the first piece involved some trampoline jumps and bellyflop landings onto the mat below. But as the evening went on they presented some clever and often daring bits with leaps over each other demanding accuracy so they didn’t land on a fellow dancers head or a woman in a box high above the stage and moving all around, not falling the dozen feet to the mat below until the very end.
