Weekly Report from Boulder
Last Tuesday was primary day in Colorado. I'd never been to one but decided it was a good time to start. When I got up to speak, I actually got booed for confessing to being an unrepentant Nader voter. But someone spoke up for me that I had made the effort to come and to let me speak. I shared that the early support for Dean and the presence of Kucinich in the campaign had given me hope for the Democrats. In the end, all of the delegates from my precinct were for Dennis Kucinich. There was more argument in our senatorial races with an aim for finding someone electable. When the Republicans are putting up Peter Coors you just know that plenty of money will be there to support his run.

Friday was the music night for me. I paid my first visit to Cervantes in Denver and enjoyed the setting and feel of the venue with its giant disco ball, blacklit background, and comfy booths for cuddling. This was a wonderful full night of adventurous music. Starting off was local prepared guitarist Janet Feder, adding safety pins and alligator clips to her guitar strings. Following her was the man I was deeply interested in seeing ñ experimental drummer Chris Cutler. He's a founder of Recommended Records. (Dave Kerman recently opened up a Recommended US office in Denver and brought together this show.) We never figured out just what it was that Cutler was using a bow for, one of the many very different approaches to drums and music he brought to the evening.

Cutler's set evolved right into that of Thomas Dimuzio, an experimental electronic performer. We couldn't quite make out what he was playing and doing onstage with his apple computer and various dials and electronics. But the output was definitely intriguing. Trumpeter Cuong Vu was a late addition to the show and kept the music edgy but flowing. He's a masterful player that is very at ease with his instrument, even when playing the complicated parts. And of course we had to stay for the final set by locals Hamster Theater. They keep the proper balance of complexity with playfulness in their music.

Yesterday I had to get up to Copper Mountain for the last day of skiing. Greyboy Allstars were playing at the base and we caught a little of their set. It's funny to see people in ski clothes acting like they are on a beach.
