Weekly Report from Boulder
Fund drive, day three. We're up over $60,000 raised on the way to $165,000. Attitudes are still generally good, not too much loopy, silliness that can set in after a few hours of trying to come up with a new exciting way to ask people for money. One woman called me while I was on the air last night just to give feedback on the quality of pledge raps. She says KGNU is a special and lucky entity in Boulder where generosity is not the first description of the citizenry.

Last Thursday we had a visit from the monks of the Tibetan Drepung Gomang Monastery in South India. They did some chants on air, including with their long horns. Afterwards we asked them to do a blessing for our building. It really did generate a nice feel to take us into the pledge drive.

On Friday I happened to log into the Aspen Daily News to be greeted by the news that KSPN has fired Steve Skinner, their morning DJ. Skinner is one of those true naturals on the air, a treat to listen to for his ability to blend good music (for commercial radio) and keep the banter going without tumbling off into excessive inanity, like that which is used by too many morning DJs. It's awfully sad to see the Roaring Fork Valley lose its two greatest radio assets in such short order. Satellite radio anyone?

That said, I should back up and say that when I was at the local radio conference in Fort Collins I had a good time talking to Brent, station manager of KAJX. After a difficult past for KAJX, Brent looks to be a good stabilizing force and is taking measures to see that they are well-situated as our local public radio giant finally lands in the valley.
