Weekly Report from Boulder
Last week Christine Lavin came to town to do two benefit performances for KGNU. She's such a delightful person, I enjoyed meeting her at the studio the day of the show. Thanks to all who came out for those shows and supported KGNU while getting some good laughs in!
It was just a week ago now that I was here following the crazy Avalanche/Canucks game on the computer as I finished up reports. As I listened on the radio on the way home I seriously thought about stopping somewhere so I could watch. Thankfully I stifled that urge, as it turned out listening to the fight that sent Moore to the hospital with a broken neck was sickening enough. This is not what I watch hockey for. I'm a fan of the skaters and finesse players; the Gretzkys and Sakics who skate and pass not drop the gloves and fight. Betuzzi should be out of the game for just as long as Moore is.
I was able to take a three-day weekend finally so I headed up to Copper Mountain to ski on Friday. People on the lifts said the snow there was much better than at Vail, which scared me as I didn't find it to be all that great. There is a balance in spring skiing when the snow gets just warm enough to be soft but not so warm to turn into mashed potatoes. Sadly Copper never got up to that point, staying more towards the ice sheet, with some patches even looking blue for being so watery and frozen. Day two was at Aspen Mountain where some good conditions were to be found as the day wore on. This is a mountain where you start the day on great east facing slopes then move to the other side, especially the face of Bell as the day wears on. I had so much fun that Sunday morning I decided I would use up the last day of my Aspen pass by hitting the opening of the lifts, even if I could only ski an hour. What a treat this turned into, Aspen not being a morning town. The fresh-groomed corduroy was ideal and virtually all my own as the crowds barely started to show as it was time for me to return to town, grab a quick breakfast with mom, and hit the road back to Boulder.
