Weekly Report from Boulder
Spring must be coming up, it's so much busier around here lately. Part of my attention is going to getting ready for our spring fund drive, coming up at the end of the month. I'm still requesting and organizing premiums, so if you have music available, let me know. We are most in need of international and bluegrass, two of our most popular premium styles.

Friday was a busy morning here at the station. We had former local (now based in New Orleans) Washboard Chaz in for an interview. When he was done I invited him to stick around to meet the Asylum Street Spankers. It turned out they were familiar with each other, Wammo from the Spankers calling Chaz the best washboard player around. Chaz was doing an opening gig that evening next door to Trilogy, where the Spankers were playing, so he was able to come over with his group the Tinmen and play a few songs and sit in with the Spankers. I've seen the Spankers play a lot but went to the show again, largely out of curiousity to see the new lineup. It does not disappoint, especially with the inclusion of a keyboard player, Reese, and Westy, a 7-foot tall ukulele player. (Yes, it is as incongruous to see as it sounds!)

After the show I was talking to local clarinetist Dexter Payne. We both had a chance to talk some with Christina from the Spankers. Upon finding out that Dexter was a clarinetist she mentioned he should consider auditioning for them as Stanley no longer tours with the group. One of us mentioned Stanley having lived here, and wouldn't you know, it turns out Dexter and Stanley Smith used to play together in town!

Last night Marita came over for dinner and to watch the Oscars. It's always fun to have a friend to watch with so you can talk during commercials and long winded speeches. Darn, no Michael Moore this year, though props go to Tim Robbins for wearing his peace pin. Sadly the Boulder documentary maker did not win her category, but we were pleased to see local avant-garde filmmaker Stan Brakhage mentioned amongst the film community lost to us last year.
