Weekly Report from Boulder
This last week was certainly a busy one. Last Monday I had to dash out of here to get to the hockey game in Denver. Sadly it was the first game after the Avs whipped Detroit, and the first of a three-game losing streak. Much of the problem was bad officiating but the fact that Milan Hejduk could not control the puck did not help.
Thursday my friend Alexey and I went to see the movie the Triplets of Belleville. I won&Mac226;t even try to describe it but will just say if you like art, if you like film, go see this. It was the most imaginative, creative, richly designed film I&Mac226;ve seen in a long time. And it doesn&Mac226;t hurt that two of my passions are included &Mac246; Belgian references and bicycle racing.
Friday found Fred Frith in town with Janet Feder. They played at a small studio in north Boulder for a very lovely and intimate evening. We weren&Mac226;t sure if this would turn into a loud, intense affair so were very pleased that it was more ethereal than just blaring guitar. He played everyway possible on the guitar; from raking the ends of the guitar strings above the headstock, to wetting his finger and running it on the wooden body, to shaking the guitar with a ball inside, to bowing a can set on top of the strings. Really a delightful evening, beyond these descriptions as he has such an ability to manage what must sound like chaos as I cite them.
The weekend was spent in Fort Collins as sister station KRFC (almost one year old now!) hosted the High Country Community Radio Conference. Besides us there were folks from KVNF in Paonia, KSJD in Cortez, KAJX in Aspen, KHEN in Salida, and even Moab&Mac226;s KZMU sent a contingent. I found this to be a good opportunity to get together, share ideas and leads, see what they&Mac226;ve done in Ft. Collins, and just talk with fellow community radio stations.
