Weekly Report from Boulder
This week's chart is dedicated to my buddy Skip who has always been a great fellow MD to chat with about this crazy job we have shared. I am sickened that KDNK is cutting the budget for their music department. With KGNU's exploration of our Denver possibilities I have been very heartened that music has remained as a core part of what we do. Public radio really needs to work at putting the good music forward so that it's not all Beyoncé all the time.

One of the things we do a lot in this job is deal with interviews. Looking back on last week's schedule I realized how much time I spent arranging one interview in particular, and it wasn't even for us! We do ISDN recordings here and a busy local author managed to be a challenge to nail down for a time slot to talk to a Canadian station. This week we've been trading lots of email in hopes of getting Fred Frith here as he comes through town. Darn, schedule is tight so that looks like a phone interview. But at least that same morning we will get Tim O'Brien in the studio.

The weekend was good as Bert was here before he heads out on tour next week. You can see where his band, the California Guitar Trio will be playing at http://www.cgtrio.com/tour.htm. Saturday, I took him into the hills west of Boulder for some snowshoeing along Ceran St. Vrain Creek. This was a good location as it is not used by cross-country skiers and we were able to head out along a trail and back along the creek bed. We both enjoyed listening to the different sounds of the creek underneath us as well as just being out to enjoy a sunny day in the snow. On Sunday we went to the Soiled Dove in Denver with our friend Bill Janssen, a great local sax player. Corey Harris was the main act and they both admired his natural singing and guitar playing as well as his ability to move stylistically from straight blues to Jamaican influenced songs to a song he learned in Niafunke from Ali Farka Toure.

Anyone in the area don't forget to come on out to the Silent Auction this Thursday at 7pm at the Dairy Center, over there at 2590 Walnut Street. Lots of goodies are available from Llama treks to CD packages, a kaleidoscope, a scooter, the Milan Hejduk signed hockey stick, lots of gift certificates, and even a bicycle! I hope to see folks there!
