Weekly Report from Boulder
How much am I not a football fan? Yesterday I flipped by the Super Bowl long enough to see that the game was tied with a minute left to play. Then I went back to my movie not staying around long enough to see if someone scored in regulation. The main reason to tune by was my curiosity about the commercials. I wondered what ads CBS was airing that they found the Move On "Child’s Pay" ad too controversial to air. So today I hear tales of how beyond even the Viagra commercials there were numerous crotch references in beer commercials. Not to mention Janet Jackson’s exposed bosom. Do stop by the MoveOn.org website to see a well made, poignant and compelling ad that apparently wasn’t suited to be broadcast by a station that had no qualms airing ads favoring the Bush Whitehouse.
Did anyone else find it odd that Michael Powell now thinks that obscenity fines aren’t steep enough? The guy has been so in favor of media consolidation and now he sees that these big companies don’t really care if they get stuck with a $7k or even $27k fine. His rant came right after the FCC decided that when Bono says Fuck, it’s an adjective. Well I still find it a scary climate out there. The kind of fine that would slightly hurt a Clear Channel station could kill a non-commercial station.
