Weekly Report from Boulder
Happy Geography Awareness Week! Do you know where you are? In Boulder we are 40 degrees north of the equator, that's why we have a Baseline Road in town. One of my favorite geographic trivia questions has always been; where in the US did I live before if I drove south to Canada? Okay, here's one more, do you know what the two major languages are in Belgium?

Last week was the KGNU Annual Meeting. Of course we had a decent turnout as the question of Denver expanding into Denver still looms. The big news of this years meeting was the introduction of Kris Abrams as she joins KGNU to coordinate our efforts around the Denver issue. Many of you may know of Kris for the years she spent as senior producer at Democracy Now.

Liz and I ducked out before the end of the meeting to make it down to the Boulder Theater. Nick and Tom from Devotchka opened up the evening, where it was wonderful to hear their live, albeit stripped down performance. The crowd was very receptive, as they well deserved. But of course, much enthusiasm was saved for Todd Rundgren who never fails to amuse in his live shows. From just him and his guitar, to his piano, then to a version of Bang on the Drum all Day on Ukulele, Todd is an entertainer with a conscience. His rants against W were well appreciated by the Boulder crowd, though his taunting after mentioning a visit to a son with the Florida Marlins unveiled the Avalanche fans in the audience. Using an MP3 player, Todd was able to have a fuller backup of the bossa nova flavor, ala With a Twist, for some of his more popular tunes. I loved his looseness at this point, not taking himself too seriously but being able to entertain and amuse.

Last night we had Stuart Davis on for our Kabaret show. I called him after reviewing his latest album Bell and finding it better than many of the albums I get on the major labels. He's a terrific songwriter and performer. Of course when I asked him about how he could be into zen and hockey and he answered with a song I was hooked.
