Weekly Report from Boulder
Last week had some wonderful concerts around here. Tuesday night local "trailer park jazzers" County Road X opened up for Bill Frisell at the Boulder Theater. At the last minute I was asked to emcee which meant I got to go backstage and briefly meet Frisell. Hes very nice and calm but retreated quickly to his dressing room. This tour was with the Intercontinentals and I just loved Vinicius Cantuaria for his soulful Brazilian feel to singing, percussion, and guitar. A few people I saw didnt make it through the entire show, which was a shame. I found it to get better as the show went on as each artist got to step out more in the latter part of the evening, including Sidikis great drum solo.
As if we hadnt had enough great guitars on Tuesday, the next night was off to Denver for King Crimson and Living Colour. They papered the house so we had two carloads heading down to see the show. Living Colour was good and I was happy to finally see Vernon Reid play live. He has some amazingly fast fingers, though I liked the more far out, less straight up melodic bits where he wasnt just showing his speed. I have only heard the new album once but my impression is that they are group more known for their playing than their songwriting. I had seen Doug Wimbish, the bass player before in one of the last shows at Denvers Rainbow with Tackhead. Remembering how loud that show was prompted me to make sure I had earplugs with me. One highlight was a wonderfully bass heavy break into Police and Thieves with Vernon on vocals.
In between sets I commented to a guy wearing his Clear Channel Sucks shirt. I did feel a bit surprised that when Robert Fripp makes bold statements on his record albums about the struggle to retain an individual artists rights to their music that he would play a Clear Channel venue. Perhaps next time they can play the Boulder Theater
King Crimson was far better than the last time I saw them. More chance for Fripps guitar to soar. Unfortunately Belew had some technical problems, which was part of what brought down the last show of theirs I saw. This time the band never got bogged down in that and was able to keep more of the momentum. As the show was not too full there was even room to dance on Dinosaur. All in all a good night but the heavy Wimbish bass for Living Colour reminded me how much I miss Tony Levins presence in this group.
I enjoyed a fairly mellow weekend around the house, with the quiet broken on Saturday by the flyover of a B2 Bomber. This was headed over the CU Stadium where the football team was about to play. Its so wonderful to see this is where our military funds go. I had to wonder what makes this plane a "stealth" plane as loud as it was in flying past.
Last Friday marked the second week that the Daily Camera has started publishing KGNUs top ten songs. Were in a three-week rotation with the two other stations based here in Boulder. Each station certainly shows its own identity with these listings. Thanks to Matt Sebastian at the Camera for making that happen.
