Weekly Report from Boulder
I had a great visit to Salt Lake City with my friend Bert. We visited Antelope Island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake. There are still herds of bison roaming out there, very cool to see. Salt Lake is pretty low now so getting up high on the hillsides we could see wide areas that most years are under water but are now exposed. I thought the smell of the lake was due to the low water, but apparently the salinity and brine shrimp give the lake that smell all the time. Salt Lake City has some wonderful food so we were able to try Italian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan foods.

Salt Lake was dry and warm, as it was here when I returned. Wednesday it was warm enough that I could sit out on my deck in shorts. I left my windows open for that last hit of fresh air in the house. By midday I was concerned about that as the Overland Fire was due west of my house. We’ve had our share of wildfires, and this was not like what they’ve seen in California, but the high winds of the day made it grow more rapidly than I remember a fire here spreading. In one day 5000 acres and about a dozen structures burned. You’ve rarely seen an area so happy for clouds, rain and cool temperatures as we were on Thursday. Thankfully it’s stayed cool and wet so that the fires here are extinguished.

No one at KGNU tends to dress up for Halloween so instead of wearing a real costume, I just pulled some oddities out of the closet to amend my normal workday attire. Joanne’s first reaction was "You only have one earring on." She saw the dangly skeleton, but not the zipper pull in the other ear. Later as she noted the red, studded, double belt she asked "What are you dressed as?" After a quick stop at Target where I got to see a guy in green face and green hair ask around "Anyone seen any fangs?" I went home to dress for a party. Instead of an actual costume, I went more for the goth/punk/school girl look. Then I apologized for not dressing up. Of course the fact that I rarely wear dresses or makeup was a bit of a tip off. Kathy may have had the best outfit where she pulled together a great 60s mod outfit, complete with white knee high boots and her round yellow hat and white gloves.

The rest of my weekend was pretty uneventful: a last trip to the farmer’s market, an experiment at making green chile soup, more work on getting the home computer working again, and reading Accordion Crimes. Now it’s a busy week here of guitar gods. In two nights I will get to see Bill Frisell, Vinicius Cantuaria, Vernon Reid, Adrian Belew, and Robert Fripp.
