Weekly Report from Boulder
Another lovely week out here in Colorado. Is everyone having this long, slow, warm fall? It’s fabulous, though we wonder when ski season will ever start. It’s been so warm many of the ski areas haven’t been consistently able to make snow. Not sure if anywhere will be able to open this month.

What a shame about the demise of the Cubs and the Bosox. Just when non-baseball fans like myself started to take an interest, it all came to a close. Now I’m back to my usual, "What? They still play baseball in October?" But hockey has gotten underway and I’m sure the Swiss fan club of David Aebischer is going nuts. He’s started out well in net for the Avs and may be able to hold on to the job.

My favorite comment of last week was a musician who came by the studios to do an interview we engineered for another station. Afterwards he eagerly asked me how I thought it went. I found him too young to have much very interesting to say, just not enough life experience, but could honestly say he’d done fine. He said good, as his first interviews were so bad that he got sent to media class by the label. That cracked me up. Media class. Most artists I run into are so eager to talk or know that they are selling themselves to need media class. Though admittedly, there are a few of us here who feel eligible to teach that as we see the do’s and don’ts of good interviews.

We’ve been hugely busy with interviews of late. Today was Alexi Murdoch; last week we had Michelle Shocked, Buddy Mondlock, the Two High String Band and John Reischmann. It’s been fun to have them through. We keep it up this week when Swedish group Väsen plays as I host the Wednesday Afternoon Sound Alternative.

One night last week I headed over to Free Speech TV which is the satellite TV equivalent of our progressive news programming. They are conveniently located on the Dish Network right next to WorldLink TV, which seem to be the only worthwhile reasons to get satellite TV. They were doing their fund drive and I helped out on the phones as they had helped here. It was amazing to talk to people around the country, in places where community and alternative radio is just not available and hear so many people thanking the station for airing Democracy Now. Common quotes ran from "It’s the only source of truth out there," "everyone should see or hear this," and "I’m 70 years old and this is the worst I’ve ever seen this country." I took over $2000 worth of pledges in a half hour after Amy Goodman’s interview with Michael Moore. They were good about making a package of Moore’s work for a $200 pledge, which helped the phones light up.
