Weekly Report from Boulder
On Friday morning I thought I would walk in to a normal first day of the drive but instead was greeted by the news that long-time KGNU volunteer Buck Buckner had passed away Thursday. Buck and I go way back as he used to patronize the first photo lab I worked for in town. His was the kind of presence that always lit up a room, a positive energy even after his diagnosis for prostate cancer. Bucks howl on the bluegrass calendar was one of the signature sounds of KGNU. He will be missed.
Later that afternoon another volunteer, Chip Grandits called in. Thursday was the birth of his first child. It was a great reminder that life is truly a giant wheel always in motion.
This weekend and next are time for Boulders Open Studios tours. Friday night was the opening for this event at the library where you pick up your guide to the locations of the artists studios. I stopped by to say hi to old friends like Maria and Kevan and see a lovely pastel by KGNU volunteer Pauline. With the intensity of the crowd, it felt like a miracle to run into my friends Alexey and Marita and finally get a chance to go drink wine with them afterwards.
Saturday was another workday for me. Slightly crazy with so many people in the studios and the announcement about Buck keeping the phone lines busy. In the afternoon, while the reggae show was on live, we had Sex Mob stop in the studios to record some music and interviews for later use. They opened for Garage a Trois the night before, a show I skipped to have one evening this week at home.
Saturday evening we got to the Fillmore about when doors were scheduled to open to find long lines out front. I have not seen such disorganization at a show in a long time. The unpleasantly long lines were not helped by the utter lack of organization at the windows. When we had waited at least half an hour, they finally decided to declare one window for Will-Call only. Moving over there seemed to make sense but didnt make anyone behind us any happier. I dont know why they were so ill prepared for the crowds though I had some impression a number of people were purchasing tickets last minute.
Inside Garage a Trois were already on stage doing their jazz inflected jam style. The crowd varied in how much attention they were paying to them, and miraculously, I found Skip Naft in the craziness and spent some time catching up with him. But it was loud enough that we each decided to save our voices for later, Skip having started the day with his record sale before the drive down.
Finally the main act came out and what can I say? Spearhead still rocks! This was one of the largest crowds Ive seen for a show of his and he obviously loved the energy. The audience picked up on the peaceful, loving energy that Michael Franti spreads and while crowded together, there was still room to dance and lots of sharing of joints with little smoking of tobacco. For over two hours Spearhead kept us on our feet; hugging, dancing, jumping, and singing along. At the end of the show he then jumped down into the crowd to give anyone a hug that was patient enough to wait their turn. We headed off to the restrooms to come back just as he was heading off. I had my chance to thank him for seeing that ample tickets were available for KGNU (with me pulling in eight early pledges last week for these passes!) and him remembering seeing me in Japan and saying it was good to see me back home. We briefly stopped in across the street at Charlies, Denvers gay cowboy bar, before making the trek back to Boulder.
