KGNU Playlists Top Releases week ending 9.29.2003 Weekly Report from Boulder It’s the peak of autumn up in the high country and as I haven’t had my fall escape to Aspen this year I took a drive on Saturday up along the Peak to Peak Highway from Ward to Nederland. It’s just beautiful and the trees seem to take on a glow all their own. Of course the road is a bit crazy with all the motorists up sightseeing. In Yellowstone I know they refer to "Moose Jams", traffic jams caused by moose sightings. So this weekend I guess they were the "Red and Golden Tree Jams," where drivers pulled over for the especially rich aspen groves. Sunday was Margaritor’s birthday and she’s finished some remodeling at her house so we joined her for margaritas and potluck on the deck. I’d already been out for a good bike ride so when we played Frisbee in the street my tight hamstrings made chasing the disc a challenge. The house cleared out as 8pm approached as we all headed for home to watch the Blues knowing the first episode would have all the good African material. Sure enough I was not disappointed at the great footage of Ali Farka Toure in Niafunke. Early in the episode with one scratchy recording of Son House after another I kept being anxious for the Africans and felt like Habib Koite and Salif Keita got fairly short shrift. So it was certainly a treat that we did get to spend some time in Mali seeing and hearing Ali Farka Toure. Corey Harris was not bad, and I certainly preferred shots of him quietly absorbing people’s comments as opposed to hosts that talk just to talk. Watching the Blues I had the fun moments of realizing I’ve met Corey Harris and Habib Koite as they’ve come through KGNU. But I wasn’t prepared to catch another familiar face while channel surfing afterwards. But there on C-SPAN was Vick Mickunas interviewing author Luisa Lang Owen on their book program. Nice suit Vick!
