Weekly Report from Boulder
Last week was an adventure for me in biking to work, or really home from work. On Tuesday I left late and felt surprised at the early sunset. At least that makes for a fast, dusk ride and once home I found my lights and put them in the backpack for next time. On Wednesday I was inspired to ride in again only to see a heavy rainstorm hitting here. Thankfully Joanne drove me to the bus but the ride home from the bus was still pretty nasty. At least dry clothes were just minutes away.
The worst thing about being out in the evening now is I get the occasional mosquito bite. It’s just not the little thing it used to be and makes me anxious each time. I am still talking to people with West Nile stories, including one guy for whom it had manifested into a month long struggle with meningitis.
The big event for the week for us was the culmination of the prairie dog art project. We’ve never located the missing dog, sadly. Saturday morning in downtown Boulder there was a parade of the prairie dogs. They were then moved to the Odd Fellows Hall and set up for the evening’s auction. This was very well attended, around 400 people had packed the place to view the prairie dogs and participate in the auction.
One woman had given me a proxy so I had a lot of fun getting to bid on the "Mexican Sun" dog and watch the price go higher. It was especially great as the other person stopped right as we got to the cap I’d been given. After that it got crazy, and the beautiful dog "Willa" with ceramic pieces molded, fitted, glazed and fired then reapplied was up for bid. The auctioneer started that one out at $500, my limit on the proxy I was given for that dog. Ah well, I’d already had my fun so I made it to the back of the room. I was talking to a friend and we had to stop and watch our eyes bulge as the price on a dog started going through the $1000 range, into the $2000 range before finally being sold for $2600! Thanks to all who participated in this fun event! From the artists, to the stores who made homes for the dogs, to the nonprofits that took on prairie dogs for topical issues, to Joanne and the volunteers who pulled it together.
