Weekly Report from Boulder
Have you heard how Colorado has the highest rate of West Nile Virus around? Well it’s hit home here, as I have known a few people to get it. One was a very healthy volunteer who said it knocked him down for over two weeks. Some people are saying up to five weeks. I’m wondering if that’s what has hit some of my DJs who have wound up calling in to bail out of shows that same day

Last week KGNU hosted Jim Hightower at the Flatirons Theater on the Hill. (At least that place is still open! Tulagi’s closed down for non-payment of taxes though we keep hoping that the Fox will be taking them over.) A sold-out crowd listened to Jim’s populist viewpoint. I caught him here in the morning and was able to get a nice photo of him with station manager Marty Durlin and news director Sam Fuqua.

Thursday night Jim Lauderdale was in town with Donna the Buffalo. I was at home making dinner when I got a call from him to confirm that we were doing an interview here in the morning. When he offered tickets for the show I couldn’t turn him down so I came into town and got to the Fox right when he hit the stage. Jim is a good writer and performer, not to mention a snappy dresser. Donna the Buffalo was good though I far preferred Tara Nevins on vocals to the male singer.

Friday morning I ran over to the hotel to pick up Lauderdale for his on air interview. There he sat in my car with his bowl of granola and cup of yogurt. We had fun chatting about Boulder on the drive over. So many musicians I talk to really feel a big difference in this town from so many of the other places they visit. It’s a good reminder for those of us who are here all the time. We talked some too about the loss of Johnny Cash and how it didn’t seem too surprising for him to follow his wife June this year. I loved the quote of Cash that he isn’t going to hell as he’s already seen enough of it!

It’s hard to believe that this Saturday is the culmination of our prairie dog art project. We’ll be gathering all the decorated dogs for a silent auction at 7pm at the Boulder Odd Fellows Hall on Pearl Street. All the details are here http://www.kgnu.org/prairiedogs/index.html. Sadly someone has absconded with what is one of my favorite of the prairie dogs, the Prairie Dove, decorated by Cathy Melio, from WERU in Maine. There is a photo of it on our website so do let us know if you have seen this dog anywhere. It’s ironic to me that a piece of art dedicated to peace is the one to get stolen.
