Weekly Report from Boulder
Let’s see, last writing I was off to see Onda play in Louisville(Colorado, they pronounce the S here) at the start of Labor Day weekend. Roberto Sequiero, a host of our Latin show, Corriente, leads Onda. It always helps me to see DJs when they are in action doing their own music and his was a good party band. Louisville recently built a nice pavilion to host the summer series, which nicely focuses the crowd and kept us dry when the rains came in at the end.

Labor Day found me at Red Rocks for the first ever E-Town at Red Rocks. It’s always fun to see the Blind Boys of Alabama but I was sad to see only the two of them, Clarence and Jimmy, with George not able to make the show. They previewed some of their forthcoming Christmas album, which should be great fun. Michelle Shocked was next up with her band. This was a good contrast to the last time I saw her solo when she had so many sing-a-longs. Skip and his wife Patty made it down though I only saw them briefly. We wound up not sticking around for the end of the show so we could beat the crowds home.

This past weekend was another one full of music and events. Friday saw the Asylum Street Spankers back at the Trilogy for their most crowded yet Boulder show. We don’t know if it was just the Friday night mayhem or what, but what a crazy crowd that was. One old friend said somebody nearly punched him out! Not that he would be a type to cause trouble or bring that out of anyone, he’s just a punk loving, long-haired, hockey player. Saturday was far mellower as Israeli/Iraqi violinist and oud player Yair Dalal did a lovely show at the Senior Center. It turned out to be a lovely auditorium and a large, receptive crowd took in the show.

Despite spending most of the weekend at a KGNU retreat, I was still ready for one more night out as a few women friends and I went off to the Boulder Dinner Theater. This was an entertainment form my mom never liked so I had never been before. Well the Boulder Dinner Theater is quite nice with a good setting and a solid band. I thought they did a good job with Chicago though it’s funny how the longer-term actors with the Dinner Theater seem a little more canned than the other performers. The lead women were solid and it was a very enjoyable show, with the predictably average meal accompanying it.
