Weekly Report from Boulder
It’s raining like crazy this afternoon after also having rained at 5am here today. Rain in the morning is fairly unusual for us, normally being a late day phenomenon in the late summer. With any luck it will help the poor plants on my deck that have not faired so well with all my recent absences.

Aspen was great fun and my sister and I hiked almost every day. I had great hopes of some nice bike rides for Friday and Saturday as she was scheduled to leave Friday morning to return to Ann Arbor. Of course she got stranded out here, poor thing, so her husband and his daughter and I went on the ride to Woody Creek while my sister caught up on some sleep.

Our radio diet was even more mixed up this time. Of course I caught Skip’s show on Wednesday, with his guest Andy Cahn. I also listened some to KSPN, which doesn’t seem to have changed too much since getting sold. But my brother-in-law works for Sirius Satellite Radio so he set up the receiver and we listened to their "Organic Rock" station. It’s not too bad but for a system trying to market itself on freshness, I still found them overplaying a good bit of material.

Live music was on the agenda as well so we caught Dar Williams playing on the hill at Snowmass Thursday night. This was the most active we ever saw the Snowmass Mall during the week. Dar was fun but her music begs to be paid attention to and this crowd was all about socializing.

The socializing at the Aspen Music Festival is far more contained. My mother works for the Festival in the summer as well as at KAJX so she knows most of the people. We went to hear Christopher Rouse’s Flute Concerto and she took pride in introducing me to him before the performance. What a piece! I knew I was apt to like it when they had four double basses and four percussionists joining the many violinists on stage. The soloist was quite good and the orchestra did well in exploring the dynamic range of the material. After the show mom also introduced me to Sharon Isbin, a wonderful classical guitarist.

I’m back now and into a crazy week of work. This coming Saturday is time for the KGNU annual Book and Record Sale. We’ll be holding it here at the station for the first time this year, taking advantage of the fact that we own our own space. The sale starts at 9am for members, 10am for the general public and continues til 5p. I think I am not the only person who donated my cassettes having finally graduated to a CD player in the car. Come on by for those and many other goodies!
