Weekly Report from Boulder
The week was quite busy with Monday finding us doing our live Kabaret show while a meeting was held about our potential AM expansion. We lost out on the one station we had considered but there is a lot of interest in exploring our options so the discussions continue.

On Tuesday there was a great show at the Boulder Theater of Les Nubians and Zap Mama. Les Nubians have nice energy and while they are a bit pop, I thought they set the stage for Zap Mama quite well and put some higher expectations on Marie Dualne and the gals. How wonderful that they met those, putting on their best show since their Boulder debut. We danced, we loved the vocals and the band and the fun costumes and design sense that Marie brings to the show.

Wednesday found me back at the Boulder Theater as I had not yet seen Rivers and Tides, the film on landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy. It is a beautifully filmed movie, which is crucial in trying to capture an artist like this at work. His patience, sense of humor, and sense of place all came out quite well in the film. And how refreshing to see an artist whose work isn’t meant to be immortal but who understands that all things must pass and that it’s fine for his art to live for a brief and unpredictable amount of time as well.

Did I mention it was a busy week? Well Thursday was time for volunteer orientation, which we do each month for new people to come learn about the station. Which meant Friday was my first day to cut away and get to the Millennium Hotel and visit with people in town for the AAA Radio Conference. I saw many of the folks I was hoping to catch right away, and it’s always great to get that chance to catch up right here in town. Back to KGNU we unveiled the new mosaic in our hallway thanking the donors who have contributed to the fund to buy this building. We have reached the point where our mortgage is now less than rent in our old facility so thanks to all who helped make that happen.

By Saturday I needed some quality time at home and thankfully got the house clean and Japan things put away so that I could get ready for the week in Aspen. So when I showed up at Tulagi’s to catch the Mavericks and Rodney Crowell it was funny to see all the conference folks on their last gas as I was all perky from a day off. But I think I picked my show well – Rodney has such amazing control of an audience and had everyone engaged and singing along to a dynamic cover of Like a Rolling Stone. His band was tight and fun and joined him in covering that range of quiet and subtle moments to the rocking, high-energy parts. Then the Mavericks came out and what fun to see the crowd happily dancing away.
