Weekly Report from Boulder
It’s hard to believe it’s already two weeks ago now that Afro Celts were here. That was awesome to have them in and they loved our record library, so Neil, our webmaster, got some fun shots of us in there.

Japan was awesome! I flew on July 23 to San Francisco and met Bert and Paul of the California Guitar Trio for the trip across the Pacific. We were met by Jon, the translator, at Narita then driven over to Naeba Ski Resort for the festival. We stayed in the part of the hotel nearest the festival site with the other artists so it was fun to run into people like Michael Franti and Ben Harper as we got our fish on rice and miso soup for breakfast. I ran into Michael Franti every day, him being the first musician we saw as we had on our debut walk to check out the festival site, the last one we saw as we wrapped up on Sunday, and finally me standing with the Japanese hotel staff as we waved goodbye as his tour bus pulled off. Before his show on Saturday we ran into him in the elevator and Paul said he was looking forward to the show that afternoon and that he hoped the rain would stop. Franti just smiled and said "Or not, it’s cool" and sure enough didn’t let the rain slow down his show.

Bert and I spent a lot of time walking around and enjoying the beauty of the area and catching what music we could. I wanted to see Spearhead, he wanted to see Goldfrapp, as their violinist has attended Guitar Craft training led by Bert. Our favorite Japanese band was Mad Capsule Markets. We also caught some music from Evanescence, Oooioo, Yo La Tengo, Bjork, IMO, Ima Robot, and Ben Harper. Some music we just heard from the hotel so it was fun to hear strains of Watching the Detectives or Passenger back in a dry space.

California Guitar Trio stayed busy doing four performances during the week, from opening up the big stage on Saturday morning to an appearance on Japanese radio InterFM Sunday afternoon right before their best show at the solar powered Avalon Stage. Different stages had different appeals, that stage having wonderful organic coffee, the Field of Heaven offering hemp beer.

Monday it was back to Tokyo for a few days, which included time for CGT to do an interview at Universal Records Japan. Then we were treated to a wonderful Korean Barbecue thanks to Tami and Masa. This was our first night of sake drinking! Who knew there were so many varieties of sake in Japan. Wednesday was one of those strange days of wandering around Tokyo all morning, leaving the hotel at 2p for a 6p flight and being in San Francisco that morning at 11am, when I thought I was wandering around Tokyo.
