Weekly Report from Boulder
What a busy, crazy week this was and is. Friday night was the start of the Denver LoDo Music Festival. This always seems to happen in the heat of the summer. So sure enough, we got to Denver in scalding heat but in time to catch bits of Los Mocosos and great local funksters United Dope Front. The event felt a bit smaller and not as crowded this year, but of course the stage was crowded when Medeski Martin and Wood took off. We also caught a bit of Rebirth Brass Band before the rain came in. Sadly this seemed to drive the crowds, and us, away before we had a chance to catch the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Sunday was a day for more music as we held our 15th Annual Charles Sawtelle GNU Mountain Jam. The day was cool but the music was hot and yet again, Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams showed me that they are very talented local band that deserves more recognition for their upbeat brand of country swing. Not only do they write solid songs, they do some great covers of the immortal Hank Williams.

Today is the day AfroCelts are in town and we were pleased to host them in the studio. They are still working out how to deliver their sound live at radio stations and I hope they get to where more tracks are performed strictly by them instead of having a CD backing track for more drums and keys. But the energy was good and how divine it was to sit there watching and listening to N’faly and Iarla’s divine voices and the solid playing of Simon, James, and Emer. I need to rush off soon to tonight’s show at Chautauqua!

But not before mentioning an interesting local story. Our paper, the Daily Camera, has fired a writer for not specifically citing sources in a story he wrote, that clearly was about a certain author and book, but because he included some passages without quotations, he was let go. This was a well-regarded writer covering relationship issues. At the same time, the president is still trying to evade more scrutiny for his remarks about Iraq and their quest for nukes. After the death of David Kelly, I have to wonder if that will draw enough attention to the fact that there seems to be no validation behind this administration’s remarks. To me, this looks to be a good question for how liberal is most media in this country anymore? Not very if this story does not get deep scrutiny.
