Grassroots Radio Conference XII
The Grassroots Radio Conference is happening June 21-24, 2007 hosted by Thinking Out Loud and WUML at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Join other community activists from grassroots, volunteer-powered, community radio stations to connect, learn new skills, discuss critical issuesaffecting community media, and do some partying.
The Grassroots Radio Conference is an annual gathering where community activists from grassroots, volunteer-powered, community radio stations to connect, learn new skills, discuss critical issuesaffecting community media, and do some partying. And you’re invited!
The conference is the latest gathering of the Grassroots Radio Coalition, a loose group of many stations and people that has no bylaws, no dues, no staff, and no standing structure except a listserv. What the coalition does have is a history and a set of ideas… The history: building a movement for social change, justice, and democracy through media that reflects these values. The ideas: that we’re committed to building community, serving underserved groups, challenging our listeners, expanding cultural experience, providing community access to the airwaves, and airing diverse programming. We don’t often realize that the conversations we have over beverages about improving our newscasts, or our music shows, or our service to our communities really can be the foundations for building a better society. That’s what we’re doing at the Grassroots Radio Conference XII. Trying to figure out more and new ways of action, making new friendships and renewing old ones, creating great radio.
Grassroots Use of Technology Conference
This year, the Grassroots RadioConfeence will be held in conjunction with the Organizers’ Collaborative’s Grassroots Use of Technology Conference. Holding the two conferences together will increase our ability to share grassroots communications tools for social change. Participants may attend anyworkshop at either conference. The event is presented in collaboration with the CTC VISTA Project at UMass Boston.
The Organizers’ Collaborative identifies and develops low-cost, replicable technology, software, and trainings to meet the organizing, outrech, and fundraising needs of small non-profits. It is made up of community organizers and technology consultants dedicated to helping community organiations and other non-profits integrate technology into their work.
WMUL and its public affairs program, “Thinking Out Loud” are hosting this year’s conference at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, which is providing crucial assistance to the conference.
