CPB funding

On June 7, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies approved its FY 2007 appropriations bill, which funds the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

CPB provides funding for public broadcasters, both radio and TV. The CPB appropriation includes a recission from the $400 million already appropriated by Congress for FY 2007; no advance appropriation for FY 2009; and eliminates funding for Ready to Learn. The cuts represent a 21.5 percent reduction from CPB?s FY 2006 levels, and would be felt in all CPB programs, including KGNU?s grant (this year $133K, about 18 percent of our operating budget).

The approved legislation now must go to the full House Committee on Appropriations, then the full House. The Senate will consider its version of the bill in July.

Please let your congressional representatives know that you support public broadcasting by contacting them directly (Colorado?s congress member contact information available at KGNU); or contact them through tellthempublicmatters.com; or moveon.org.
