The Charles Sawtelle Gnu Mt Jam

16th Charles Sawtelle Gnu Mountain Jam

Chris Daniels & the Kings,

Jackstraw,

Missing String Band and

St. Vrain Sisters

Jackstraw

It used to be called the Gnu Mountain Jam, and the Music Coordinator was Hot Rize guitarist Charles Sawtelle. When Charles died of leukemia in 1999, we renamed the event the Charles Sawtelle Gnu Mountain Jam. Now it's been shortened simply to "the Charles."

  • The Missing String Band plays bluegrass, swing and Americana; the five-piece combo is led by Michael McKee.
  • The St. Vrain Sisters play old-time music ("before it was bluegrass") and features local musicians Ellen Klaver, Ellen Rosenberg, Anita Dolen and Pat Togonici
  • Jackstraw is a bluegrass quintet including Darrin Craig (guitar), David Pugh (mandolin), Jon Neufeld (guitar), Jesse Withers (bass) and Danny Barnes (banjo). Based in Portland OR, the young band plays between 250-300 dates a year around the country.
  • The Denver-based Chris Daniels and the Kings combines blues, rock and folk in hard-driving performances that bring audiences to their feet.

Besides the succession of local and national music acts, the event features Texas-style pit barbeque (with vegetarian options) and all the fixin's, including salads, breads and deserts. Local micro-brews will also be available - all for very reasonable prices.
